NOAA Area Forecast Discussion:
FXUS65 KFGZ 311628 AFDFGZ AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FLAGSTAFF AZ 925 AM MST SAT JUL 31 2010 .SYNOPSIS... AN EXTREMELY MOIST AIR-MASS WILL CONTINUE TO BRING SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO NORTHERN AND CENTRAL ARIZONA THROUGH THE WEEKEND. SOME STORMS WILL PRODUCE TORRENTIAL RAINFALL. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT SATURDAY NIGHT.
.DISCUSSION... A VERY MOIST AIR-MASS REMAINS OVER AZ THIS MORNING. MORNING SOUNDING FROM BELLEMONT INDICATES 1.24 INCHES PRECIPITABLE WATER... DOWN SLIGHTLY FROM YESTERDAY MAINLY DUE TO SLIGHTLY COOLER LOW LEVELS... BUT NEARLY SATURATED UP TO 450 MB. A MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE VORTEX CONTINUES TO SPIN OVER NORTHWEST AZ WITH WIDESPREAD MODERATE TO HEAVY SHOWERS SEEN ON RADAR AROUND THIS FEATURE... ESPECIALLY FROM NEAR FLAGSTAFF SOUTH AND WESTWARD THROUGH MUCH OF YAVAPAI COUNTY. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES UNTIL MIDNIGHT TONIGHT FOR ALL NORTHERN AZ ZONES AND THIS LOOKS GOOD. THUNDERSTORMS WILL INTENSIFY THIS AFTERNOON WITH DAYTIME HEATING AND SPREAD THROUGHOUT NORTHERN AZ AGAIN. IN SUMMARY... ANOTHER VERY WET DAY ACROSS NORTHERN AZ ON TAP WITH LOCALLY TORRENTIAL RAIN IN THUNDERSTORMS AND A STRONG THREAT OF FLASH FLOODING IN FLOOD PRONE AREAS. CURRENT FORECAST IS ON TRACK AND NO UPDATES PLANNED THIS MORNING.
.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION/320 AM MST/... VERY HIGH PW VALUES AND WEAK FLOW WILL REMAIN OVER THE STATE TODAY THROUGH AT LEAST MONDAY. A WEAK UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE SEEN ON WATER VAPOR IMAGERY NEAR TUCSON WILL BECOME A FOCAL POINT FOR CONVECTION TODAY AND TOMORROW AS IT MOVES NORTHWEST. THERE COULD BE SOME MCS ACTIVITY TONIGHT OR SUNDAY NIGHT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FEATURE AS WELL. SATURATED GROUND AND CONTINUED HIGH RAINFALL RATES JUSTIFY THE FLASH FLOOD WATCH THAT IS CURRENTLY OUT. THIS WILL BE THE SITUATION FOR A FEW MORE DAYS... BEFORE SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW BEGINS TO SCOUR OUT THE DEEPER MOISTURE BY THE MIDDLE TO END OF NEXT WEEK. THIS IS BY NO MEANS A SIGNIFICANT DRYING TREND... JUST A RETURN TO MORE OF A MODERATE MONSOONAL PATTERN... INSTEAD OF THE CURRENT HIGH-END SCENARIO THAT WE HAVE BEEN UNDER FOR DAYS.
.AVIATION... FOR THE 18Z PACKAGE... SCT-NMRS SHRA/TSRA ACROSS ALL NRN AZ TODAY AND THIS EVENING. VERY HEAVY RAIN... AREAS MVFR... LOCAL IFR AND LIFR CONDITIONS AND GUSTY AND VARIABLE SFC WINDS NEAR TSRA. AVIATION DISCUSSION NOT UPDATED FOR AMENDMENTS.
.FGZ WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FOR ALL NORTHERN ARIZONA FORECAST ZONES UNTIL MIDNIGHT SUNDAY MORNING. PUBLIC... ... .DJO AVIATION... ..
